The Transmission Code covers three technical areas - special protection schemes, planned outages, and reactive compensation - and contains the practices, judgements, and standards that Transpower recognises as good electrical industry practice.
Appendices to the Transmission Code form a commentary, which provides context, supporting information, and guidance as to how the Transmission Code should be applied.
The initial Transmission Code was formally published on 24 December 2009.

Transpower established a Steering Group in November 2008 to produce a Transmission Code (Code). The objective was to produce a set of technical planning requirements that Transpower would apply to ensure the transmission grid remains resilient and fit for purpose, and consistent with good industry practice.
The Steering Group (mostly industry CEOs) oversaw and advised on the programme. A Working Group of industry technical experts worked with Transpower’s engineers and consultants on the development of the Code, providing technical input, technical challenge and industry knowledge.
The Code is consistent with prevailing Rules and Regulations and is complemented and informed by Transpower’s technology strategies such as Grid Development Strategy TP2040 and other public documents. It will integrate with Transpower’s long term asset management strategy.
