Transpower is investigating options to meet increasing demand on its 110 kV network supplying the Timaru area (Timaru, Temuka, Tekapo, Albury).
At certain times during peak periods, the Timaru area load exceeds the firm capacity of the 110 kV interconnecting transformers, relying on generation at Tekapo A and Opuha (which works to keep the net Timaru area load below the transformers’ post-contingency ratings) to provide a secure supply. The ability of generation to cover for the shortfall in the interconnecting transformers’ firm capacity is expected to decrease over time as demand grows.
