Maungatapere bus security upgrade

Overview

What we're doing

Transpower is carrying out a project to:

• install a bus coupler on the Maungatapere 110 kV bus
• upgrade the protection at the Maungatapere 110 kV bus to include bus zone protection, circuit breaker fail, and duplicate line protection.

Why we're doing it

The Maungatapere 110 kV bus supplies much of the Northland 110 kV and 50 kV transmission network (Maungatapere, Kensington, Dargaville, Kaikohe, Kaitaia, Maungaturoto and Wellsford). This work will prevent a 110 kV bus fault at Maungatapere causing a total loss of supply to these substations.
