Kaitimako Transmission Reinforcement

Overview

What we're doing

We are carrying out a project to increase our transmission into the Western Bay of Plenty (Tauranga and Mount Maunganui) by:

  • converting the 110 kV Kaitimako–Tarukenga circuit to operate at 220 kV; and
  • installing new 220/110 kV interconnecting transformers at Kaitimako.

Why we're doing it

An outage of one of the Kaitimako–Tarukenga circuits (and the subsequent switching out of the Kaitimako–Te Matai circuit) can overload the other and cause low voltages at Kaitimako, Tauranga and Mount Maunganui.
