Overview

Haywards substation is located on Haywards Hill in Lower Hutt, north of Wellington. It has two important functions: sending and receiving direct current (DC) electricity and sending alternating current (AC) for distribution to consumers.

The closest major electricity generation plants are in Taranaki and the central North Island, which predominantly supply the upper North Island. Haywards plays a very important role in ensuring electricity is distributed to where it is needed in the lower half of the North Island.

The construction of Pole 3 has special challenges as it will be undertaken in a live, operating substation.
